Encountering the world with i-docs, Bristol University Press
Interactive Documentaries are great tools for creative and collective thinking. As web based, nonlinear, multi media documentaries, i-docs can showcase multiple versions of a story and give users dynamic options for how to navigate. This unique format makes them perfect for thinking through complexity, multiperspectivity, and nonlinearity.
In her new book Encountering the World with i-Docs, Ella shows how just planning an i-doc, without making anything digital, can offer new analytical perspectives. The book includes a template for ‘thinking with i-docs’ to be used by researchers and creatives.
The book will be out with Bristol University Press in January 2025. You can pre-order it here!
One of our favourite areas of work at the Thinking Tools Studio is developing interactive tools for young people in schools, pupil referral units, and colleges. Our digital thinking tools spark explorative, creative, and collective thinking on curriculum content and personal development topics.
These tools are especially effective with ‘hard to engage’ or neurodivergent students who enjoy dynamic, hands-on ways of learning.

arts as evidence thinking tool, Natural england
As part of the ambitious project ‘Arts as Evidence’ at Natural England, Ella created a thinking tool that will enable environmental scientists to imagine and activate arts-science collaborations. The tool helps scientists to understand the values of arts approaches and get beyond path of least resistance thinking to find novel ways of doing environmental research and management.
Reporting dashboard London development trust
London Development Trust needed a new Dashboard to optimise how they report to trustees. We ran a consultation workshop to inform a user friendly, interactive platform, refined in line with their brand style and ethos. The dashboard will ensure trustees are informed, engaged and motivated to support LDT’s crucial work in community development.
Productivity tools, task Manager
As part of Progress Today, the Thinking Tools Studio is, of course, invested in thinking tools that enable and accelerate progress. Our task manager template from Trello is an easy and effective way to organise your week and align efforts with collaborators.
